How to Get Rid of Bad Breath

Of course, the best thing you can do to get rid of bad breath is to brush your teeth twice a day. For some, though, simply brushing your teeth isn’t enough. If you suffer from bad breath regularly, try out some of these breath-boosting techniques. 

  • Flossing: If we forget to floss, food particles can get stuck in our teeth and gums. Over time, these food particles can rot and begin to smell. This can seriously damage our breath and cause an unpleasant odor. Always remember to floss — for your gum health and to keep your friends around!
  • Clean Your Oral Device: Whether you wear dentures, a retainer, or a TMJ device, you should clean your oral device regularly. Not only does a dirty device make your breath smell, but it also harbors a massive amount of bacteria. Keep your devices clean to keep your mouth clean!
  • Replace Your Brush: After two or three months, it’s time to switch out your toothbrush. When the bristles start to show wear, your toothbrush doesn’t clean your mouth as well as it should. If you want to keep your breath fresh, switch out your toothbrush every few months. 
  • Avoid Dry Mouth: Beyond being uncomfortable, dry mouth can also make our breath smell worse. Avoid drying elements like tobacco and alcohol and make sure to drink enough water throughout the day. 

Tools To Rid of Bad Breath

If you need extra help fighting off bad breath, check out these tools to freshen up. 

  • Tongue Scraper: Although you can brush your tongue with your toothbrush, it’s more efficient (and sanitary) to brush your tongue with a tongue scraper. Your tongue harbors a lot of bacteria, especially in the back, which can affect the smell of your breath. Brush away the bacteria for good and invest in a good tongue scraper. 
  • Water Pick: For those of you who hate flossing but recognize its importance, try using a water pick. Water picks eliminate 99% of plaque biofilm and significantly reduce your risk of gingivitis.
  • Mouthwash: If you’re going to use a mouthwash/rinse, make sure it is nonalcoholic. Alcoholic mouthwash can dry out your mouth and actually contribute to bad breath. Nonalcoholic rinses kill bacteria while keeping your breath smelling fresh and clean. 

Fight Bad Breath With Food

We all know onions and garlic can leave a foul, lingering smell. Did you know that alcohol and coffee can also make your breath smell? Both of these beverages have a drying effect on the mouth that makes foul smells last longer. Try out these foods and beverages instead:

  • Water: Promotes saliva production and washes bacteria away.
  • Parsley: Contains chlorophyll which can remove odors from your mouth.
  • Probiotic Yogurt: Contains good bacteria that balances out bad bacteria.
