Although gum infection can lead to some serious side effects down the road, there are a number of home remedies to treat and prevent gum infection and gingivitis.

What Causes a Gum Infection?

Poor oral hygiene along with plaque, tartar, and bacteria are the most common causes of a gum infection. However, other health concerns and habits like smoking, hormonal changes, periodontal disease, genetic predisposition, poor nutrition, stress, medication, and diabetes can contribute to or cause a gum infection.

Home Remedies for Gum Infections

  • Aloe vera is an anti-inflammatory with healing properties that are beneficial in dealing with gum disease. Aloe vera also has antimicrobial agents which help kill the bacteria that cause gum disease. Massage your gums with fresh aloe vera, leaving it on for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes gently rinse the aloe from your gums with water. You may also swish aloe juice around in your mouth for a similar effect.

 

  • Tea Tree Oil‘s anti-inflammatory properties soothe inflamed gums. An easy way to incorporate tea tree oil into your oral routine is by simply placing a few drops of tea tree oil onto your toothpaste before brushing or by purchasing a toothpaste that already has tea tree oil in it.

 

  • Salt water is key in fighting oral bacteria, which is why it’s a common routine after oral surgeries like wisdom teeth extraction. Salt removes and dries out the liquid in bacteria cells, causing the cells to burst. Dissolve one teaspoon of salt in ½ cup of warm water, rinsing thoroughly with the solution for at least a minute.

 

  • Turmeric is a known anti-inflammatory that works wonders on a number of health conditions. Turmeric also has antimicrobial agents which helps kill bacteria in the gums. You can make a turmeric paste by adding one teaspoon of turmeric with 1.2 teaspoons of salt and ½ teaspoon of mustard oil. Rub the mixture over your teeth and gums twice daily.

 

  • Oil pulling not only strengthens your teeth and gums but it also reduces plaque and relieves bad breath. Swish one tablespoon of coconut oil around your mouth for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes you may rinse, but do not gargle or swallow the coconut oil.

Additional Home Remedies for Fighting a Gum Infection

Staying on top of your oral health is key in fighting off a gum infection. Make sure your toothbrush has either soft or extra soft bristles and make a point to floss daily. Visiting the dentist 1-2 times a year is also recommended, as well as limiting your sugar intake. Purchasing an electric toothbrush is a great way to maximize cleaning and ensure you’re ridding your mouth of food and bacteria that may later get trapped in your gums.
